LET OUR LAB DETERMINE THE PROPER MEDIA FOR YOUR PARTS

Each steel shape is an individual polishing tool. Its size and shape is selected to accomplish a particular task on a specific surface of your part. It is used in combination with other shapes to reach every surface of your part.
In the finishing mode, the mass itself must provide insulation and support to keep parts from excessive contact with one another, and consequent parts damage. Tests are often needed to ascertain the most effective proportion of shapes, work and media for different types of parts. For proper insulation, the ratio of media to parts is seldom less than two-to-one (by volume, not by weight). For certain pans, this may have to be increased to three, four, or occasionally as high as ten times the volume of media in relation to delicate parts.

Depending on the part to be finished, a single size, or many different sizes of balls may be used. Or, a ball and cone mixture may provide the required contacts. Except when pins are included, the use of two or more shapes is not necessary if a single size can be selected that will touch on all surfaces to be finished.

Special care must be taken to choose sizes that will not lodge in any openings on the parts. Any tendency to lodge must be determined not only by testing a single shape in the opening, but by considering how two or more shapes might combine to plug an opening. Testing is also important to determine proper machine amplitude, load, length-of-run and other variables that comprise the operation.

Abbott's Experimental Laboratory will provide a free analysis of your pan(s) for finishing with steel media. Simply send us unfinished samples, with a description of the desired finish, and we'll advise you how to best accomplish your goal with steel media.
